TIM Brasil is expected to switch on its Standalone (SA) 5G network in Brasilia next week. According to TeleTime, which cites a presentation by company president Alberto Griselli at the Telebrasil 2022 Summit, the launch will take place on 5 July. The Brasilia network will initially comprise around 100 antennas utilising the 3.5GHz band, while Mr Griselli estimates that around 80% of new smartphones sold via its stores are able to support 5G.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, earlier this month the deadline for releasing the commercial 5G frequencies was moved from 30 June to 29 August 2022, while the deadline for activating 5G services in all state capitals and the Federal District – with at least one base station per 100,000 inhabitants – was moved from 31 July to 29 September 2022.
The TeleTime report notes that rival operator Claro Brasil intends to hold a press conference detailing its own SA 5G launch plans on 30 June.
