O2 CR claims ‘up to 5Gbps' speeds in 28GHz 5G trials

Czech mobile network operator (MNO) O2 CR has reported achieving data transmission speeds of up to 5Gbps during 5G trials in the 26.5GHz-27.3GHz (28GHz) band with a radio channel width of 800MHz.

Claiming a first for the country, the MNO confirmed it has been building ‘true 5G networks for several months now’ while its technology director Jan Hruskaand noted that adding 5G using millimetre waves (mmWave) will help ‘solve the connection of the so-called last mile in the future not only in households, but also in public institutions such as schools, libraries or hospitals or in smaller companies that need higher connection capacity than households’. O2 CR is using frequencies granted temporarily by the Czech Telecommunication Office (CTU) to test mmWave technology. The network has been launched on several transmitters at O2’s headquarters and its surroundings in Prague’s Brumlovka district, and also in Chodov, where O2 operates its largest data centre.
