The Philippines’ third telco DITO Telecommunity announced that it has signed up “close to nine million’ mobile subscriptions across 560 areas of operation nationwide, and targets twelve million by the end of this year.
Given that the company reported it had reached the milestone of seven million ‘active’ mobile subscriptions on its network by mid-March this year, the end-2022 target would appear doable. However, whilst the rate of growth of its user base is impressive, DITO has faced costly delays to its rollout which has plunged parent group DITO CME Holdings into the red. Nonetheless, the new third telco plans to invest PHP50 billion (USD981 million) in capital expenditure projects this year as it continues the rollout of its networks to meet the terms and conditions of its licence award. The CAPEX will be used to ensure that the company hits its mandated target of at least 70% population coverage by end-2022; DITO’s current coverage is over 65% and it could reach its target as soon as this month.
