Lithuania outlines 3.5GHz spectrum auction plans

Lithuania’s regulator has unveiled plans for its 5G spectrum auction in the 3.5GHz band, revealing the starting price for airwaves.

The Communications Regulatory Authority (Rysiu Reguliavimo Tarnyba, RRT) has outlined the auction will make up of three 100MHz lots of spectrum in the 3400MHz-3700MHz range which will be valid for 20 years, reported CommsUpdate.

Interested parties can only bid for one block of spectrum in the auction with the starting price to be €3 million (US$3.3m).

Winners of airwaves will have to fulfil coverage and service obligations such as: launching 5G in one city from 2023, deploying 5G in major cities from 2024, and extending 5G coverage to all towns and densely populated areas by 2030. Interested parties must register by May 31.

RRT has confirmed participants for its 700MHz spectrum auction, with Bite, Tele2 and Telia all confirming participation. Last month the RRT allowed operators to launch 5G services with existing spectrum to ease the transition from 4G to 5G.
