ITU members to set standardization agenda

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will hold a press conference on 10 March at 13:30 CET to share the outcomes of a key global standardization assembly for digital technologies.

The online press conference will follow the ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), the governing conference for ITU's standardization arm (ITU-T).

Technical standards are needed to harness the accelerating uptake of technologies in fields such as 5G, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence to help meet United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Spotlight on sustainable development

The ITU Global Standards Symposium, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 28 February, highlighted the rising share of ITU standardization work dedicated to environmental sustainability, healthcare, road safety, financial inclusion, and the creation of smart cities and communities.

The symposium has paved the way for the decisive WTSA between 1 and 9 March, with the symposium's steering committee submitting recommended actions for ITU's membership at WTSA.

Setting the standardization agenda

WTSA-20 – delayed for two years by the COVID-19 pandemic – will set the agenda for ITU's standardization work to meet emerging industry and societal needs.

WTSA reviews the strategic direction, structure and working methods of ITU-T. This global event, normally held every four years, also approves the mandates of standardization expert groups (ITU-T Study Groups) and appoints their leadership teams.
