Globe Telecom calls for regulatory backup against illegal signal boosters

Globe Telecom cracked down on network disrupting signal boosters but has called for backup from regulator the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to toughen up rules to combat illegal equipment use, reported the Inquirer.

The operator said in a statement: “Globe is reiterating its call for the NTC to develop an updated framework against the sale and use of illegal boosters and repeaters in the country. This equipment is sold rampantly online and causes network disruptions.”

In 2020, the operator called for the national regulator to conduct monthly scans on frequencies to detect illegal use and provide consumers with recommended repeaters that do not interfere.

Globe stated it is currently collaborating with the Bangsamoro Telecommunications Commission of the island of Mindanao to stamp out signal boosters on the island. Around 50 illegal repeaters shave been confiscated in this collaboration.

Signal boosters may boost coverage but the quality of service suffers through drop calls and slower speeds, explained Globe.

Globe Telecom general counsel Froilan Castelo said the operator is “exerting” effort in maintaining services against signal boosters, which can also hinder network upgrades.
