Wholesale fibre provider Enable Networks has announced plans to upgrade most fiber broadband customers across the Christchurch area to a new fibre connection providing maximum down/upload speeds of 300Mbps/100Mbps. The company says it will be ready to roll out the free performance upgrade to approximately 90,000 homes on either its 100Mbps or 200Mbps service from 1 December, although it will be up to retail service providers to pass on the enhanced speeds to customers.
Announcing the speed upgrade, Enable Networks Chief Executive Johnathan Eele commented: ‘Local customers need complete confidence that their fibre broadband service will support them to do all the things they want online. It’s time for another step change in the performance of the average family fibre broadband service to meet the increased use and demand we are seeing … We’re now seeing Enable customers using around 500GB of data per month, which is an increase of 33% in the last year.’
Fellow wholesale fibre provider Chorus announced in August it would replace its 100Mbps accesses with 300Mbps connections at no additional cost to customers. The company is still working through the process with retail service providers but expects some upgrades to happen before Christmas.
