Russia’s national telecommunications operator Rostelecom PJSC has designed a cloud platform in cooperation with the company JSC MCST, which has developed the Elbrus processor.
The software platform, Russian Elbrus Cloud, is deployed in Rostelecom at its own development and testing stands on Elbrus servers. The user environments "Elbrus Linux" from MCST and "Alt Linux" from "Basalt SPO" are used as operating systems.
"The container virtualization solution allows you to run multiple services on a single server. At the same time, each of them has a unique system environment, including from different operating systems, which significantly reduces the volume of TSO1 of the domestic hardware and software platform," said a release.
In the process of switching to Russian hardware, companies face several difficulties: existing information systems do not work on domestic platforms or require improvement, there are not enough specialized specialists to develop on the domestic technology stack, there are not enough solutions in individual software classes, there are no ready-made virtualization platforms for Russian processors. The Russian Elbrus Cloud is the first example of industrial-level container virtualization technology for the Elbrus platform.
An important competitive advantage of Rostelecom's solution is the availability of experienced specialists with programming skills for Elbrus processors. An interested company can get access to the cloud and test, develop, port its software on the domestic hardware and software stack or use the support of specialists from the Rostelecom competence center.
In the future, the company intends to provide customers with a software platform for containerization under the Elbrus architecture for installation on their equipment and the creation of private clouds.
