Slovenia proposes a European Netflix

Slovenia, which currently holds the presidency of the European Council, has proposed that EU members consider “European digital and technological sovereignty” by creating a European online platform with streaming content.

Quoting a document obtained by the Politico newspaper, N1 TV reports that such a platform would help European broadcasters compete with US providers. While national radio and TV stations are bound by national rules, foreign platforms broadcast their content without hindrance.

Although the document, which is dated October 1 and based on contributions from European countries, does not specifically name Netflix or any other foreign platform, these services are already widely used throughout Europe.

Netflix and Amazon Prime have more than 80 million European subscribers and Disney+ 10 million.

In the document, Slovenia says it wants to increase the number of European films available on streaming platforms, especially quality films that cover a wide range of content and are suitable for different age groups.
