TPG Telecom (branded TPG Mobile) plans to carry out a 5G non-standalone (NSA) market trial in Singapore until the end of the year, having been given the thumbs up by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).
The Edge Singapore reports that the limited trial will use spectrum in the 2300MHz band and will be available to all TPG post-paid SIM-only subscribers with a suitable 5G device, at no additional cost. However, coverage is currently limited to just five buildings but more indoor coverage is being added, with outdoor coverage said to be ‘in progress’, while critics note that to date, only six mobile devices are verified to work on TPG’s 5G NSA 2.3GHz network and argue that its 40MHz bandwidth allocation is inadequate to deliver ‘true’ 5G speeds (requiring between 60MHz-100MHz). The newcomer is, however, looking to use 26GHz/28GHz, or millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum, in future to deploy 5G.
