Chile’s Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (Miniseterio de Transportes y Telecomunicaciones, MTT) and the Regional Government of O’Higgins have announced plans to invest CLP15.506 billion (USD21.5 million) in the development of last mile projects for the region.
The programmes will look to provide connectivity from the National Fibre Optic (Fibra Optica Nacional, FON) network directly to homes.
Commenting on the plan, Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Gloria Hutt was quoted as saying: ‘Digital connectivity is fundamental in people’s lives because not only does it generate the possibility of carrying out work activities remotely, but also, it is possible to maintain contact with loved ones as well as continue studying. Our number one objective is to reduce the digital divide in order to improve the quality of life of all citizens, especially in situations like the ones we are experiencing today as a result of the pandemic.’
