Nepal Telecom’s fiber infrastructure now available for sharing

Telecom companies in Nepal can now use Nepal Telecom‘s fiber infrastructures for the high-speed transmission networks. This is the start of sharing of infrastructures which will be essential for telecom network rollout and expansion.

While the mutual sharing of the fiber infrastructures has been in news for a while, Nepal Telecom’s board meeting made the final verdict just last week.

The infrastructure sharing will benefit emerging telecom operators to acquire required resources at an affordable cost. It will help them to expand their service nationwide conveniently at the expense of Nepal Telecom’s infrastructures.

NTA had already tasked Nepal Telecom to set up infrastructures but the plan was stalled for technical reasons as well as COVID-19 induced lockdown. However, better late than never, the project has got a green light.

Nepal telecom’s Managing Director Dilliram Adhikari said that the company will be sharing fiber optics above 48-cores to ensure advanced fiber connection.

Establishing fiber connections is as important as maintaining them for seamless connectivity. For this purpose, Nepal telecom will install Active Fiber Monitoring System. This will enable Nepal Telecom to maintain and monitor the system round the clock and facilitate a uniform connection.

Once a company starts utilizing Nepal Telecom’s fiber transmission, it cannot resell this to other telecom or ISPs.

NTC MD further said, “Active Fiber Monitoring System will help to check the usage and problems of the fiber network. Adding to that it will also help to ensure whether a certain company has resold it on.”

The fiber transmission sharing will integrate telecom companies into one ecosystem. This will help in providing a uniform service as the origin of telecom services will be centralized. Further, it is a win-win situation for both the infrastructure owner and the company that is using the resources of others.

What is your view of fiber infrastructure sharing? Do you entertain the idea that telecom companies would share fiber connections with others rather than establish their own? How do you think it will impact the internet connection? Let us know in the comments section below.
