Naji Khoury, president and CEO of Liberty Puerto Rico, has revealed that Liberty Mobile VI has already deployed 5G technology at 54% of its cell sites across Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas. The executive told the Saint Thomas Source that the cellco is on course to extend the 5G service to 70% of its network by end-2021.
Khoury commented: ‘All of the work that we are currently doing is starting to produce results. We see it in our USVI cell sites, which improved their available capacity by 78% … the end result will be a faster, more resilient mobile network that will give customers a better signal, fewer dropped calls and a faster mobile internet.’
TeleGeography notes that the cellco now known as Liberty Mobile VI previously traded as AT&T Communications; the unit – and its Puerto Rican sister company – were acquired by Liberty Latin America (LLA) in a USD1.95 billion deal that closed in October 2020. AT&T switched on its 850MHz 5G network shortly before the transaction closed.
