Digicel delivering fiber connectivity to schools in Curaçao

Digicel has signed an agreement with the Government of Curaçao under the School Digitalisation Project that will see 118 schools receive high-speed fibre optic internet connectivity.

The Ministry of Education will oversee the initiative together with the regulator, the Bureau of Telecommunication & Post (BT&P), after they found Digicel’s proposal to be the most economically and technically practical.

The Curaçao Chronicle reported that the project will use networks belonging both to Digicel and its TRES Networks subsidiary to deliver three levels of connection speeds via fibre optic infrastructure, with each level based on the number of students that attend each school.

As reported by TeleGeography, the base speeds have been set as Metro Ethernet connections of 100Mbps, 200Mbps and 300Mbps. Every school participating in the initiative will be connected to shared bandwidth via a main data centre, which will be able to control access to web content.

Digicel has confirmed that the first phase, which will deliver fibre connectivity to 60 schools, can be completed within a week.
