OMREN starts Internet speed test service

Oman Research and Education Network (OMREN) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation has launched a new Internet speed test service ‘OMREN Speedtest’ dedicated for the research and education community.

Dr Abdulmonem al Kharusi, director of OMREN, stated that the new speed test service is a web-based service developed internally by the OMREN team using a well-known application from OKLA to specifically enable users to test their connectivity easily and accurately either through Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) or (Internet Lease Line) ILL lines.

This will allow researchers, teachers and the IT support team at OMREN to use communication facilities and services smoo-thly and share large learning and research resources with confidence and full transparency.

Salim al Amri, engagement manager at OMREN, added that the service is hosted at OMREN Data Centre, and is free for OMREN members just like the other services.

Some of the other features of the service include measuring MPLS speed between the MPLS connection and OMREN server via MPLS link, measuring Internet connection between ILL/FBB and OMREN server, allowing users to analyse and download all historical test result data, and enabling and disabling specific test types (download, upload, ping and jitter).
