SpeedChecker, the mobile crowdsourcing company released a new report on the performance of mobile networks in Egypt.
The market in Egypt is served by four operators :- Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat and Telecom Egypt. Despite Vodafone being the largest operator it has not performed well in either download speed or upload and lags behind the other three. Telecom Egypt (80% owned by Egypt’s government ministry) outperforms the top three despite having only a fraction of the subscribers.
Vodafone is considering it’s position in Egypt and these rankings will do nothing to persuade them to stay.
Telecom Egypt’s superior download speed is easy to see when comparing the speeds in regions on the choropleth maps. In the image below the contrast between Telecom Egypt and Vodafone is clear. Telecom Egypt owns 45% of Vodafone Egypt.
Telecom Egypt also outperforms the bigger MNOs with the best average latency of 110ms. Although this is 10% better than the others it will be a poor consolation for those that need sub 100ms for real time communication and gaming. SpeedChecker calculates latency to the servers placed within popular CDN networks. The greater than 100ms latencies are the effect of missing peering agreements with CDNs and Egyptian users needing to pull the content from European locations.
The SpeedChecker report has been compiled using data from 158,175 mobile devices performing 222,590 tests in February 2021.
