TIM Brasil initiates 2G shutdown pilot as part of ‘single grid’ plans

TIM Brasil has disclosed plans to trial a partial shutdown of its 2G GSM network. According to TeleTime, which quotes CTO Leonardo Capdeville, the deactivation process will focus on 15 cities in the first instance.

The 2G shutdown has been enabled by TIM’s December 2019 infrastructure sharing agreement with Vivo; the two cellcos agreed to work towards a ‘single grid’ 2G model, which will allow them to deactivate duplicated legacy cell sites in up to 2,700 locations. The CTO commented: ‘Throughout the year, we will accelerate the testing period, which is important to ensure quality delivery and improve and reduce costs.’
