Telekom expands 5G capacity at 1,257 locations

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic operating unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), has announced it has increased 5G network capacity at 1,257 locations in the past month. The firm is deploying Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) at these locations, enabling LTE services to also be used by customers, and it added that 4G coverage has been increased at 219 existing locations and rolled out to 71 new areas in the last month. Walter Goldenits, Managing Director Technology at Telekom Deutschland, commented: ‘Our 5G expansion will continue at full speed in 2021. This year, too, thousands of antennas will be installed or upgraded. The aim is to offer 5G to 80% of the population by the end of the year.’

In terms of fixed broadband, Telekom upgraded speeds for an additional 363,000 households in December. The firm says that a total of 33.6 million homes can now access maximum data rates of up to 100Mbps and the number of 250Mbps-enabled lines has reached 25.1 million nationwide. Meanwhile, Telekom states that the total number of households connected to its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network rose by 100,000 last month, to 2.2 million.
