Kelinkanda in the Kalutara District received communication facilities with 4G coverage yesterday (04).
The project was launched at the Kelinkanda School premises under the patronage of the Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, Oshadha Senanayake.
A group of children from the village of Kelinkanda had posted some photos on social media of themselves engaging in online education from the sides of the road as they have no coverage at their homes.
Seeing this, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission took steps to provide 4G communication facilities to the Kelinkanda area within two weeks.
Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel and Dialog jointly set up communication towers under the supervision of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka with the labor and support of the youth of the area.
The government is implementing this program under the 'Village Communication' project, which is included in the 'Vision of Prosperity' policy statement. Its aim is to provide communication facilities with 4G technology covering all provinces of the island.
The majority of the people in the village of Kelinkanda depend on agriculture crops and small scale industries for their livelihood. The area is prone to natural disasters from time to time. Lack of communication facilities was a serious impediment to providing relief to the people in such cases.
The new communication facilities are expected to improve the education of children as well as the economic and social life of the people in the area.
Coinciding with the program yesterday, computers were donated to Kelinkanda Primary School and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission laid the foundation stone for a computer lab.
Dialog and Mobitel donated computers and school equipment to Kelinkanda Colony Primary School.
