Energy-efficiency focus for new Indonesian data center

Data centre specialist SpaceDC has announced the launch of JAK2, a new data centre in Indonesia sited in the ID01 campus, which will also be home to the company’s other flagship data centre JAK1.

The new facility will not only serve Indonesia – a country of about 274.5 million people – but, SpaceDC says, will also act as a gateway to the larger Southeast Asia market.

JAK2 is a 1.45MW facility. It is Uptime Institute Tier III Design certified. It includes a two-storey administration building and is aimed at colocation and wholesale customers.

All of which is not unusual in major data centres. However, the new facility also boasts a strong emphasis on energy efficiency.

According to the Data Center Dynamics website, the JAK2 data centre uses thermal wall technology and high-efficiency electric air-cooled chillers, which, SpaceDC says, allows it to deliver a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.3.

PUE is a metric used to determine the energy efficiency of a data centre. PUE can be worked out by dividing the amount of power entering a data centre by the power used to run the computer infrastructure within it.

A selective catalytic reduction unit has also been installed at the new data centre to lower carbon emission produced by power generation.

JAK2 even has its own onsite natural gas power generator. Thus, although the compound has its own dedicated transformers to draw power from the main grid, larger customers can choose onsite power generation.

The trigeneration onsite power plant is hooked up to Indonesian natural gas company Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) and reclaims waste heat – both jacket water and engine exhaust – for greater efficiency. Backup power is also available in case of power outages.

Construction for the much larger 24MW JAK1 has also started. SpaceDC plans to launch JAK1 in 2021.
