The Russian DTH platform operator Orion has entered into an agreement with Media Alliance, a joint venture between National Media Group (NMG) and Discovery.
It will see Orion provide play-out and ground delivery services for the 4K Ultra HD channel Discovery Ultra, which made its global debut in Russia earlier this month.
Commenting on the development, Grigory Lavrov, general director of Media Alliance, said: “The concept of the Discovery Ultra TV channel assumes the maximum effect of the viewer’s “immersion” in the content, which can only be achieved using the UHD format. Orion group of companies has shown itself to be excellent in terms of play-out TV channels both in the Russian and international markets, including those broadcast in ultra-high definition. Therefore, as a technical partner who can provide high-quality and uninterrupted broadcasting, we have chosen this particular company”.
Andrey Trufanov, head of telecommunication services department at Orion, added: “We are very pleased with the high confidence in Discovery, Inc. For the Orion group of companies, this is not the first project in the field of ultra-high definition play-out TV channels. However, its implementation has become a very ambitious task for us. The condition of the colleagues was the use of technical parameters and quality of video content that were virtually unprecedented for the Russian market. Another challenge was the launch timing. An experienced team, an outstanding technical base, a creative approach to the development of technical solutions and a willingness to work within tight time frames allowed us to implement this project in a record couple of weeks”.
