TIM claims new European record for 5G at over 4Gbps

TIM is claiming leadership in "5G innovation" after running the first connection in Europe that can permanently exceed a downlink speed of 4 Gbps on a 5G live network with 26 Gigahertz (GHz) millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies acquired through MiSE’s 5G auction.

The record was achieved working with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies, to exceed the record of 2Gbps set in last January.

The new speed was achieved using Qualcomm devices with Snapdragon X55 5G modem-RF system with QTM525 mmWave Antenna module and Ericsson Radio System solutions.

TIM said, "In addition to reaching very high speeds, millimeter-wave frequencies provide high network capacity thanks to the wide bandwidth available. These characteristics allow us to develop 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services with Gigabit speeds, in particular in areas not yet covered by fixed ultrabroadband".

It added that the mmWave frequencies also allow, "'dedicated' 5G indoor coverage that can be used for vertical applications enabling new Industry 4.0 scenarios based on services with exceptional high speed, extremely low latency and the highest security and reliability of use."
