Kyrgyz state-owned mobile market leader MegaCom has announced reaching 90% 4G LTE network population coverage, following a project to increase the footprint from a little over 50% at the end of 2018.
Akylbek Dzhamangulov, General Director of MegaCom, noted that the milestone was achieved under a government strategy to reinvest in modernizing the operator’s network with LTE technology alongside a continued 3G expansion to help meet the growing demand for mobile communications and high-speed internet in all regions of Kyrgyzstan.
Dzhamangulov furthermore highlighted that MegaCom has intensified employee training to raise the level of local technical expertise, while the company plays a role in ongoing national digitalization strategies including implementation of the Safe City and Digital School programs, with future digitalization projects lined up in sectors such as hospitals and agriculture.
The director added that whilst MegaCom continues to install new data transmission equipment and build new base stations, it plans to become a transit operator to export internet traffic to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and gradually beyond the CIS region, and is also currently ‘in talks to work in partnership with global brands in the telecommunications industry’.
