MTS Belarus boosts data growth with 4G upgrade

MTS Belarus has nearly doubled data usage on its network after a substantial infrastructure deployment in the first half of this year.

CommsUpdate reports that MTS installed 235 new 4G base transceiver stations (BTS) nationwide, operating in the 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands. The new sites have enabled the operator to push its 2600MHz coverage to a further 20 towns.

In addition to the newly deployed sites, since January MTS Belarus has also overhauled 101 BTS to be 2600MHz-compatible, with the upgraded sites present across 26 Belarusian cities. It has also switched on 77 new 1800MHz BTS.

MTS, which delivers 4G in partnership with the common infrastructure provider beCloud (Belarusian Cloud Technologies), has seen data consumption pass 170 petabytes as a result of the upgrade. The operator noted that its data usage is increasing by around one petabyte per day.
