Mexican open access 700MHz operator Red Compartida has enlisted Spanish satellite provider HISPASAT for the provision of satellite backhaul access. The Amazonas 5 Ka-band satellite will connect 65 remote base stations to help provide mobile voice and data services in areas where the deployment of terrestrial infrastructure is not feasible. The two parties note that the satellite connection will mean that around 600,000 additional people are connected to the Red Compartida network.
TeleGeography notes that Red Compartida now covers more than 57 million people nationwide. Going forward, the network must cover 70% of the population by January 2021, 85% by January 2022, 88.2% by January 2023 and 92.2% of the population by January 2024.
