Sri Lanka asks telecos to give emergency credit to keep in touch in Coronavirus fight

Sri Lanka has asked telecom companies to extend credit to customers with most people unable to settle bills or make pre-paid deposits with a three day curfew clamped on the country to counter the spread of Coronavirus.

Sri Lanka’s Telecom Regulatory Commission asked telcos to extend credit to post-paid customers and provide emergency credit to pre-paid customers.

“On the direction of the President, telecom, mobile and direct to home/cable tv operators” have been asked to provide credit,

Director General of Sri Lanka’s state information office Nalaka Kaluwewa said the President had directed telecom, mobile and pay TV operators to give emergency credit because dissemination of information was vital for fight against COVID-19.

Sri Lanka clamped curfews across Sri Lanka Friday which will lifted in most areas on Monday from 0600 am till 1400 hours.

In the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Puttalam curfew will continue to Tuesday 0600 am.

In Jaffna where a pastor from Switzerland who had Coronavirus had exposed the entire congregation. The curfew will remain in place until they are identified, the government said. (Colombo/Mar22/2020)
