Liquid rolls out South Sudan fibre link

Liquid Telecom has rolled out a fibre-optic backbone network in South Sudan, following the signing of an agreement with the country’s National Communication Authority (NCA) announced in July last year.

ITWeb Africa quotes a social media post from Strive Masiyiwa, Econet Global Group’s Executive Chairman, as saying that the 200km link connects the capital Juba to the Ugandan border, providing onward connection to Liquid Telecom’s 75,000km pan-African fibre network. Liquid Telecom said its network will eventually make reliable and affordable internet connectivity available for nearly 13 million citizens of South Sudan, as well as thousands of businesses, government institutions and non-governmental organisations.

According to reports, in the same social media post Strive Masiyiwa said he was also planning a trip to Eritrea, one of the least connected countries in the world.
