British ISP Spectrum Internet, which is based in the Welsh capital Cardiff, has announced plans to construct its own gigabit-capable fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network across South Wales, according to ISPreview.
Under the project, the operator plans to cover a total of 150,000 premises with its network, targeting a number of market towns and villages in the region. While Spectrum has some previous experience in constructing fibre infrastructure – having already deployed FTTP in a small number of locations in South West England and South Wales – this large-scale initiative will take between four and five years to complete and require ‘significant investment’.
Spectrum is reportedly being advised by Cameron Barney LLP as it considers a number of financing options for the network rollout, while the ISP has not revealed any details regarding its current funding, nor offered up granular details on exactly where the new infrastructure will be deployed.
Commenting on the matter, Giles Phelps, Spectrum Internet’s founder, said: ‘Our plan is to bring ultrafast fibre-to-the-premise to 150,000 homes and businesses across south Wales over the next few years. Wales is lagging behind the rest of Europe in rolling out such technology and access to the Welsh Government assets will allow us to build on our established success to many areas currently poorly served by existing telecom operators.’
