Salto ready to launch in June

Combined French video-on-demand platform Salto will go live on June 3.

The new streaming service, a joint venture between public broadcaster France Télévisions and commercial networks TF1 and M6 will start its Beta service on June 3, 2020, when it will be possible for all customers to subscribe to the platform.

Originally Salto was scheduled to make its appearance early in 2020, but in recent weeks it has become clear the launch date was slipping.

In an interview with French daily Le Figaro, general manager Thomas Follin said Salto would then use the summer months to test its new product before a massive promotional launch in the autumn. “It will be difficult to escape from it,” he said.

Around 15,000 of hours of content will be made available across series, cinema, documentaries, youth, entertainment and realty TV. This will be expanded to 20,000 hours be the end of the year.

“We aim to take a significant share of the market. And it seems to us that there is still a huge place to occupy, Follin told Le Figaro. “The vast majority of French people are not on Netflix” and “we hope they will come to Salto”.

Subscriptions, says Follin, will be priced between €5 and €10.
