EU Commission approves fund to boost ultrafast broadband in Greece

The European Commission approved a €223 million funding of an ultrafast broadband project in Greece that will provide fast internet access to almost 11 million users across the country and in particular to those living in remote areas.

The project contributes to the objectives of Digital Europe, which aims at building the strategic digital capacities of the EU, to be used by Europe’s citizens and businesses.

It will be funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD).

“This is a clear example of the added value of Cohesion Policy, making sure no one is left behind,” Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms said.

The EC highlighted that the ultrafast broadband project will also help the direct and indirect job and business creation, the consumers when it comes to accessing e-commerce services and the people who work from home.

The ultrafast broadband is expected to be operational as of May 2021.
