XL Axiata extends 4G to Lampung’s west coast under USO

Indonesian operator XL Axiata has expanded its 4G network coverage to the west coast of Lampung, a province on the southern tip of the island of Sumatra, as part of the government’s universal service obligation (USO) scheme to provide coverage to ‘forefront, outermost and disadvantaged (a.k.a. ‘3T’) areas.

The cellco, a majority-owned unit of Malaysian telco Axiata Group, said the latest expansion – one of more than ten USO 4G programmes currently being undertaken – takes in the areas of Bandar Dalam Village, Bengkunat Belimbing District and Pesisir Barat Regency, Lampung. In total, around 2,500 base transceiver stations (BTS), including approximately 1,900 3G and 4G BTS have been deployed in the region, supporting a local customer base of more than 800,000.
