5G in Cambodia takes a step closer with customized training for Cambodian telecoms officials

China has devised a customized 5G training programme for Cambodian telecoms officials to enable them to understand China’s policy on supporting 5G development and its IT application.

The training was held at Beijing’s prestigious China Academy and Communications Technology (CAICT) for officials from Cambodia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications between January and January 10 last week.

Part of the training course involves equipping the Cambodian officials on the latest updates about the global development of 5G in China and other countries which have already embraced China’s 5G technology.

Other topics covered in the 5 days course was related to 5G topics, such as 5G Strategies and Industry Development, 5G Standard and Technologies, 5G Infrastructure Sharing and Better experience with lower tariff, 5G Spectrum Plan and Management, 5G Services and Applications, 5G Industrial Applications in Enterprise, 5G Cyber Security.

It is learned that in Cambodia, the three major telecoms operators, Smart Axiata, CellCard and Metfone are all ready to use Huawei’s 5G technology and are said to be ready to launch the network within the first quarter of this year, pending regulations from MPTC.

It was also learned that though the three operators have been conducting trials with the 5G network, the MPTC, through its regulator will issue operating licenses to all three to start at the same time to give all three a level playing field introducing the 5G technology.

“Some key performance index are expected to be placed on the operators to ensure deliverables are carried out on time and in accordance with the guidelines to be set by the regulators.

“There is possibly a fourth unknown operator, who is not currently active in the Cambodian telecom sector but is ready to launch the 5G as its main platform is also believed to be in the mix for the start of operations but at a slightly later date,” industry sources told Khmer Times.

Founded in 1957, CAICT is a scientific research institute directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China. CAICT has provided strong support for major strategies, plans, policies, standards, tests and certification for the development of the national ICT sector and the IT application.

As of January 2020, Huawei has signed 60 contracts with global operators and shipped more than 400,000 base stations. As the global leading 5G vendor, Huawei has been operating in Cambodia for more than 20 years.
