Algeria's ICT minister, Imane Houda Feraoun, has inaugurated the Alger-Oran-Valencia cable system, named Orval, consisting of 770 km of fiber optics linking the country to Spain. Unveiled last year, the project aims to strengthen Algeria's connectivity capabilities, offering an overall capacity of 40 Tbps.
In an interview with a local radio station, the minister highlighted that Orval will help reduce the country's dependency on existing cable routes, alongside the Medex subsea cable opened earlier this year. Orval's operations will be managed by telecom incumbent Algerie Telecom, which will work in Spain via its Algerie Telecom Europe subsidiary.
