Disney+ attracts 10 million signups and over 3 million app downloads in first 24 hours

The streaming service Disney+ has already reached a major milestone, securing over 10m sign-ups since launching on November 12.

In a note, its operator The Walt Disney Company adds that moving forward there are no plans to release Disney+ subscriber data outside of the company’s quarterly earnings calls.

According to Yahoo Finance, this “extraordinary demand”, as described by The Walt Disney Company, sent its shares up by 3.5%.

However, although the day one numbers were three times the size of some previous forecasts, it was unclear how many of these new customers were from free promotions.

Disney+ numbers have been boosted by a promotion from Verizon Communications offering a free one-year subscription to Disney+.

Last April Disney said it expected the new service to reach between 60-90 million subscribers by 2024. Given its strong start, this total might now be reached two years earlier.

As previously reported by Broadband TV News, Disney+ made its debut earlier this week in the US, Canada and the Netherlands.

It will launch next week in Australia, New Zealand and Puerto Rico, with markets in Western Europe following on March 31, 2020.
