NAGRA and KAON launch Android TV offer

Revealing the growing significance of the platform, leading independent provider of content protection and multiscreen television solutions provider NAGRA has struck a number of deals with tech suppliers to enable operators with Android TV solutions.

The first two of the deals were with SDMC, a professional Google-certified company for Android TV smart set-top boxes (STBs), and Amlogic, a global fabless semi-conductor company and Google system-on-a-chip (SoC) partner.

With NAGRA, the two companies will collaborate on an Android TV-based solution for pay-TV operators offered as part of the NAGRA Android Fast Track programme. The end-to-end solution will be pre-integrated with the NAGRA Connect security client and a new hybrid set-top box by SDMC powered by the Amlogic S905X3 series system-on-chip (SoC). The solution will operate in full compliance with the Google MediaCAS framework for Android TV deployments to enable hybrid Android TV based services for pay-TV operators.

In a second move in the area, NAGRA is joining forces with broadband customer premise equipment (CPE) and connected home solutions provider KAON to construct a new streaming platform designed to accelerate time-to-market of Android TV-based services for pay-TV operators. The joint solution is designed to enable an end-to-end streaming platform for the delivery of OTT and hybrid Android TV-based services and offered through the NAGRA Android Fast Track programme

Just as with Amlogic and SDMC, NAGRA will pre-integrate its security clients, including NAGRA Connect and NAGRA Protect, with a new hybrid set-top box designed by KAON, based on the Broadcom BCM7268 chipset. Again, the solution is in full compliance with the Google MediaCAS framework for Android TV deployments.

“We look forward to leveraging our expertise in securing Android TV deployments and our Fast Track ecosystem to drive even more opportunities for pay-TV operators wanting to take advantage of the Android TV opportunity while helping them protect their premium content assets from new forms of piracy,” commented Maurice Van Riek, SVP and head of content and asset security at NAGRA.
