Globe, Makati LGU partner for free Wi-Fi

Globe Telecom Inc.said it has inked an agreement with the local government of Makati to provide free Wi-Fi connections to citizens of the city.

In an e-mailed statement, Globe said it has firmed up an agreement to provide free WiFi access to 27 barangay health centers, the Makati City Hall, and the University of Makati via GoWiFi.

"Makati is a great example of an LGU that recognized the need for network infrastructure, to enhance connectivity that will benefit its residents," said Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu.

According to Cu, Globe prepaid and TM customers in Makati can enjoy 1 gigabit of free GoWiFi for every registration of GoSAKTO, GoSURF, and EasySURF worth P50 and above in any GoWiFi hotspot in the city.

Through the partnership, Globe will also install antennas on poles owned by the city government in over 100 sites, where the processing of permits will be fast-tracked.

To recall, Globe in 2017 blamed homeowners' associations in at least 25 villages in Metro Manila, including Makati City, for blocking the construction of cell sites and as a result, causing insufficient telecom service in particular areas.

"Globe has long taken up the sore issue of challenges in building cell sites as it noted that many homeowner associations (HOAs) continue to oppose cell site proposals made by the company due to alleged health hazards," the company said.

"Globe is also in talks with the city government to address the health access concerns of the residents through KonsultaMD which offers 24/7 access to licensed Filipino doctors who are trained, experienced and ready to provide with high-quality health and medical information anytime, anywhere," it added.

According to Globe, GoWiFi is currently accessible in 2,500 sites across the country as of the first half of the year, up by 500 sites from 2018.
