PLDT and its mobile unit Smart Communications are supporting the national simultaneous earthquake drill, with the third run conducted recently in Ormoc City, Leyte. The companies deployed free calls, emergency cell broadcast, satellite phones, multi-equipment on wheels, and Wi-Fi connectivity to support the drill.
PLDT and Smart disseminated emergency alerts and warnings via the Emergency Cell Broadcast System (ECBS). PLDT and Smart also provided Wi-Fi at the City Hall and for livestream coverage, and enhanced connectivity by deploying the Multi-Equipment on Wheels (MEOW).
Additionally, emergency responders had access to satellite phones, and Libreng Tawag, and free call stations were set up at the Ormoc Central School, City Hall, and SM Ormoc. PLDT-Smart also provided copies of the “Maging Laging Handa” instructional video to representatives of the Ormoc City disaster risk reduction and management office, and barangays. The material was produced by Smart to help youngsters understand the importance of disaster preparedness.
Smart Communications and Nokia recently launched drones and network services to boost disaster response efforts of the Philippine Red Cross(PRC).
