MetroNet upgrades high-speed fiber optic internet

US operator MetroNet said it upgraded its system by enabling customers to have the same upload and download speeds, removing virtually any lag time. The move to symmetrical upload and download speeds will be automatic for customers and will not increase monthly bills.

The majority of residential and business customers who are already a part of MetroNet’s 100 percent fibre optic network have been automatically upgraded to the new symmetrical speed over the last week at no cost to them. As an example of what customers can expect, those who have their 200/75 Mbps speeds will upgrade to 200/200Mbps automatically. The most notable difference in service will be seen while uploading large data files, high-resolution photos, and videos, or during online gaming. In January, MetroNet acquired Grand Rapids-based LightSpeed Fiber and expanded their footprint in the Midwest. Customers who previously had services through LightSpeed Fiber will be a part of the automatic symmetrical speed upgrade in the MetroNet family.

MetroNet is actively working to upgrade all customers to symmetrical speeds through the summer, with plans for the majority of their markets to be fully upgraded by the end of July.
