Regulator tells Brazilian carriers to block telemarketing calls

Brazilian consumers will be rid themselves of what many consider a particularly annoying practice: telemarketing.

Regulator Anatel gave local carriers a 30-day deadline to create a national “do not disturb” list of consumers who do not want to receive telemarketing calls that offer telephony, pay-TV and internet services.

The measure affects Algar, Claro/Net, Nextel, Oi, Sercomtel, Sky, TIM and Vivo.

Furthermore, telcos will need to create and promote a channel through which users will be able to express their refusal to receive such calls.

The agency also determined that the companies that are the subject of the decision will no longer be able to make telephone calls themselves to offer their telecom packages or services to consumers registered on the national list.

Anatel's goal is to push for the implementation of mechanisms that had been proposed by the providers themselves.

In March, telcos committed to set a code of conduct and mechanisms for self-regulation of telemarketing practices.

The "do not disturb" list was one of the suggestions they presented to Anatel.
