PTS expects to keep 28 GHz, 32 GHz and 38 GHz bands for fixed radio for 10 years or more

Swedish communications regulator PTS said it expects the 28 GHz, 32 GHz and 38 GHz bands to remain in use for fixed radio for at least ten years. A number of bands currently used for radio have been identified at international level as potential 5G frequencies in the future, it said, but this is some way ahead and is not definite. PTS is considering new exemptions from the requirement to have permits for short-range devices (SRD) in several bands under its revised spectrum plan, too.

PTS said a number of frequency bands are under consideration for allocation in the coming years. Allocation of the 1.5 GHz band has been pushed back to 2020 or later. The 2.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands are due to be allocated in the first quarter of 2020 at the latest. Assignation of the 2.6 GHz and 26 GHz bands are expected during 2020.

Spectrum allocation or designation for new applications will be discussed at the ITU World Radio Conference in November 2019 and PTS said it will be involved in this work, adapting changes relevant for Sweden. There will also be harmonisation decisions by the EU Commission.
