IPTV remains tops for French viewers

In France, IPTV confirmed its position as the first means of reception (all sets combined), with 56.7% of households equipped with at least one television set, just ahead of DTT reception (53.7%).

This is according to L’Observatoire de l’équipement audiovisuel des foyers de France métropolitaine, published by media regulator CSA.

The DTT platform remains important for French viewers: it is the only reception mode for more than 22% of households; its free nature also makes it the preferred reception mode for secondary sets. The modernisation work on the DTT platform, undertaken under the aegis of the CSA, will further strengthen its interest alongside other platforms, reinforcing its central place in households.

The trends observed over the past few years in terms of screens and television reception are confirmed. With a very slight decrease in the equipment rate, which is around 93.4%, the television remains the most common screen in households. Consumers also use one or more alternative screens allowing some flexibility in access to content: first the computer (85.4% of households), then the smartphone (73.6% of those aged 11 and over) and finally the tablet (48.2% of households).

Like alternative screens, the TV can also be connected: in 2018, 77.2% of households have a TV connected to the internet, directly as Smart TV (33% of households equipped with TV connected) or indirectly through the ISP TV set-top box (79%), the game console (37%) or a third party box (18%). Catch-up television is the dominant connected use from the ISP’s TV decoder.
