Manus province is expected to have access to high speed and resilient internet access by the first quarter of 2020.
This high speed internet access will be similar to Port Moresby to Lae which was made possible by PNG DataCo Limited (DataCo).
Currently Manus is serviced by satellite providers including Telikom, Digicel and Bmobile.
However, access, speed, cost, and availability of satellite services have left no options for the people of Manus that will transform and propel the island community into the digital age.
A team from DataCo comprised of engineers, commercial and contractors visited Manus recently to do a topography survey for the Cable Landing Station (CLS), which will be built at the Manus NBC premises, and the Outside Support Plant (OSP) including a beach-manhole, where the subsea cable will terminate.
Manus Open Member Job Pomat who met the team said he will provide his support to ensure all stakeholders appreciate and accept this project wholeheartedly without hindrance.
Provincial Administrator Oka Nungu was happy with the benefits of the project and officially endorsed it to proceed in the province.
They also met Manus NBC Radio station manager Leonnie Ramrau for the team to precede work inside NBC’s premises, town engineer Leo Watah Namur, engineering lands manager Piten Nama for onshore land access to avoid inconsistency with the town’ s engineering designs and planning during construction of the OSP.
The cable once landed will ensure people of Manus including business houses have access to high speed internet including other online services such as e-commerce, banking and e-learning.
The Provincial Government will then introduce and access online e-government applications and services currently enjoyed in Port Moresby.
Other government initiatives that can also benefit from this network include the NID, the Integrated Finance Management System (IFMS), Government pay system (ALESCO) and the Integrated Government Information System (IGIS).
This will certainly propel Manus to greater heights in terms of economic growth and expansion where PNG DataCo will remain the catalyst.
