Bahrain ‘key market for Huawei smartphones’

Chinese technology giant Huawei is confident of pushing 250 million pieces of its smartphones in the global market this year.

Huawei Middle East chief marketing officer Jason Chen reiterated the security of the company’s products, especially smartphones, citing their “proven track record” for more than three decades.

“Security is important to us and we put money into this, as innovation is nothing without security,” he told the GDN at a Press conference in Dubai following the launch of the company’s latest P30 smartphone series.

“As announced by our chief (Huawei’s rotating chairman Guo Ping), we have a strong track record of security for over three decades, serving three billion people around the world.”

The US, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Australia are among the countries that have banned Huawei products alleging they may contain security holes that the Chinese government could use to spy.

Some countries also alleged that Huawei stole intellectual property from foreign technology companies.

The company, however, denied the charges and last month sued the US government in a federal court in Texas.

Meanwhile, the company hoped to almost double its market share from the current 17 per cent to 30pc this year, to make it the second largest smartphone vendor in the world.

As of November 2018, the company’s market share in the premium smartphone category (phones priced above $600) had reached a new height of 12pc.

According to the International Data Corporation, Huawei currently ranks third among the top smartphone companies.

“Bahrain is among the key markets for us in the region,” said Mr Chen.

“Every country in the Mena region is important to us as we see a potentially rich market here.

“Based on our focus on innovation and technology, we are very confident of reaching number two this year and achieve the target of 250m pieces of smartphones in the market.”

The GDN reported on Tuesday that Huawei had launched its new P30 series in the Middle East, tag-lined as aiming to “rewrite the rules” of mobile photography.

The series includes Huawei P30, P30 Pro, Huawei Lite and Watch GT.

The P30 and P30 Pro feature a completely redesigned camera, which delivers “an unrivalled smartphone photography” experience.

The P30 Lite is equipped with a 32MP 3D Selfie Superstar lens that works with artificially intelligent beautification effects and the outdoor smart watch features ultra-long battery life.

Also launched were freeLace wireless earphones and Huawei X Gentle Monster Eyewear, the new smart glasses.

Huawei also announced it has worked to optimise the P30 series camera for Snapchat, bringing more camera innovation to users.

In Bahrain, the Huawei P30 is available for BD256.9, Huawei P30 Pro for BD348.9 and Huawei P30 lite for BD112.9.
