KPN’s copper-to-fibre switchover begins in two locations

Dutch telco KPN’s wholesale open network division KPN NetworkNL has begun work on shutting down legacy copper local network infrastructure and migrating customers to end-to-end fibre-optic services in its first two areas, Zwolle Stadshagen and Eersel Centrum.

In four other selected areas – Amsterdam IJburg, Bergeijk, Bennekom and Eibergen – work will start later this year, according to the operator’s website. KPN NetworkNL (formerly known as Reggefiber) aims to switch off the copper PSTN when all residents in a selected area are connected to fibre and all end-user services have been transferred by providers, with a target of 1 April 2020 ‘at the latest’ in the first two named areas. The announcement added that ‘most homes and businesses’ in the initial chosen zones already have a fibre connection point available.
