Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges has said that its subsidiary Magyar Telekom remains committed to digital development in Hungary and will continue to play an important role in building up-to-date mobile and landline infrastructure.
Speaking in a meeting with Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and quoted by Portfolio, he added that developments could be accelerated if market participants devoted some of their special taxes to this.
In the meeting, which was also attended by Srini Gopalan, DT’s member of the board of management for Europe, Tibor Rékasi, CEO of Magyar Telekom, László Palkovics, minister of innovation and technology and Antal Rogán, minister of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office, the CEOs said Magyar Telekom’s long-term goal is to provide gigabit network capability throughout the country.
The company spent nearly HUF240 billion (€746 million) on network development in Hungary between 2014 and 2018, and as a result its gigabit fixed line network has reached one million homes.
Magyar Telekom also launched its first 5G test station at the beginning of this year.
Broadband TV News notes that the meeting appears to have put a further dampener on reports that appeared last year saying that DT could sell Magyar Telekom.
