The companies Weco Weco, specializing in renewable energies, and Telsam, dedicated to telecom equipment, signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Djibouti, represented by Djibouti Telecom and Electricité Djibouti (EDD), for the construction of a data center in the country.
The infrastructure that will be built in Bab El Mandeb, in the Obock region, will allow companies and public administrations to store their important information.
Present at this ceremony, the Minister of Communication in charge of Posts and Telecommunications, Abdi Youssouf Sougueh, considered it appropriate that Djibouti thinks to have a data center in view of the character of ICT crossroads that the country will acquire in the next years in East Africa with its eight fiber optic submarine cable links (SMW3, EIG, FLAG Europe-Asian, EASSy, WIOCC, AAE1, SMW5, DARE). Connections that will develop the communications on the territory as well as the exchange of information.
New market segments such as the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will experience tremendous development and produce a considerable amount of data that will lead to a high demand for storage space that will need to be effectively addressed. This new data center will then strengthen the country's storage capacity, offered by the Djibouti Data Center (DDC) since 2013.
