Tele Columbus to introduce Gigabit internet in Berlin

German cable operator Tele Columbus wants to offer 1Gbps internet access across its cable network in Berlin.

The fibre-optic-based network of the company, whose products are marketed under the brand name PŸUR, provides around one million citizens in Berlin with TV, internet and telephony.

On the basis of DOCSIS 3.1, Tele Columbus says it is in a position to increase its internet bandwidth from the currently offered 400Mbps to 1Gbps on the capital’s existing network within just a few months.

Analogue switch-off, which will run until mid-2019, is currently creating the technical prerequisites for delivering internet speeds in the gigabit range to households.

“Our high-performance fibre-optic-based networks form the basis for the digital future and the competitiveness of Germany as a business location,” said Timm Degenhardt, CEO of Tele Columbus, at the annual kick-off event PŸUR Forum in Berlin. “The go-ahead for the gigabit city of Berlin marks the beginning of our speed offensive in the light of the massive increase in bandwidth demand and our resulting responsibility for a rapid and comprehensive expansion.”
