Brazilian telecoms operator Oi has extended its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network to a total of 31 cities across ten states, Teletime reports. The network is said to comprise around 350,000km of fibre, while new locations covered by the infrastructure are said to include Olinda, Nova Iguacu, Vespasiano and Uba.
TeleGeography notes that Oi’s FTTH network went live in September 2018. The first phase rollout – helmed by Huawei – was completed that month, covering 21 cities, including Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Recife, Salvador, Manaus, Fortaleza, Brasilia, Goiania, Porto Alegre and Curitiba. A second contract was issued to Nokia in December 2018, with a view to covering a total of ten million homes by 2021.
According to the National Telecommunications Agency (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes, Anatel) Oi ended December 2018 with a total fixed broadband user base of 5.994 million, of which 448,631 were fibre-based connections.
