The Open Fiber wholesale-only venture of Italian utility giant Enel and state lender CDP has reached a deal with Macerata city council to build a fibre-optic network in the central Italian city in a total investment of around EUR 6 million. The company said it will be rolling out 41 km of cables to bring FTTH services at speeds of up to 1Gbps to over 15,000 premises throughout the city by 2020.
The wholesale provider reached a total of 4.8 million connected homes throughout Italy at the end of last year and has plans to bring FTTH connections to around 19.5 million homes and businesses in 271 Italian cities and 7,000 smaller localities by 2022.
