Telefonica Deutschland has successfully completed a three-month pilot of 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in Hamburg. The pilot was carried out with Samsung Electronics from December 2018 to February this year and involved a number of private households in the city. 5G frequencies in the 26GHz range were used, achieving data rates of up to 1Gbps to demonstrate an alternative to fixed broadband technology, such as DSL, for homes and SMEs in Germany.
‘We can see that the Samsung technology performed brilliantly in the trial. Together with our partner, we at Telefonica Deutschland have successfully demonstrated the use and performance of a new FWA technology. The subsequent analysis of the results may help us to develop a potential business model,’ said Cayetano Carbajo Martin, CTO at Telefonica Deutschland.
